What is Dysfunctional Agile Bingo?
I recently facilitated a lean coffee session on dysfunctional agile as part of our Agile Community of Practice. Some of the attendees were very new to agile but had already experienced several dysfunctions. The main one being a product owner mismatch. This was due to a misunderstanding of the Product Owner role. The people assigned this role were too senior and could not spare the time to prepare backlog and be with the team.
Whilst preparing for the session I thought it would be useful for us to understand how many and how frequently the dysfunctions were occurring. I wanted this to be a fun activity so created Dysfunctional Agile Bingo.
How does it work?
Dysfunctional Agile Bingo works just like a normal bingo card. Each time you observe a dysfunction you check it off. When you’ve checked off all items – BINGO!
Congratulations, you have experienced all 25 dysfunctions.
By the way, there are many more than 25 but these are the ones that I have experienced the most in many different organisations.
How should I use it?
- Download the Dysfuntional Agile Bingo Card.
- Print out.
- Distribute at your next retrospective / agile event.
- Encourage the bingo players to bring their cards to the next session for review.
- Rinse and repeat.
This is a fun way of collecting data about the dysfunctions in your organisation. Once you have this data you are able to create a prioritised backlog of organisational impediments. Set up a Kanban and go impediment busting.
